Abstract
We live in a world where looking attractive has always been highly valued. Despite the idea that beauty is subjective, mankind has created several beauty standards that compel individuals to alter their lifestyles. Although many people undoubtedly experience social pressure to look a certain way, there has always been a greater focus on females’ appearance. While many extreme and dangerous beauty trends from the past may have been worse than today’s, our fixation on physical appearance is worse now because of the excessive media exposure we receive. This dynamic exposes us to pictures of unrealistic beauty daily. This is evident when looking at statistics on people’s low self-esteem and tendency to compare themselves when using social media. I hope that we can disrupt unrealistic beauty standards and value authentic beauty without letting it define us.
